Proposed Redevelopment of the Zeekoevlei and Rondevlei Weir Complex

  • Status: Draft Basic Assessment Report
  • Reference Number:: 14/12/16/3/3/1/3021
  • Authority: Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment
  • Date of notice: 2024-10-09
  • Closing date: 2024-11-08

The City of Cape Town proposes the redevelopment of the Zeekoevlei and Rondevlei weir complex in the False Bay Nature Reserve, as a way to improve long-term management and address pollution and habitat impacts in the nature reserve. The project requires environmental authorisation, and public participation on a draft Basic Assessment Report took place between June and July 2024.

A revised project proposal now envisages phasing of the project, due to budgetary constraints. The first phase would include the Zeekoevlei weir modification and fish ladders, and would commence in 2025. The second phase would comprise the new Rondevlei weir and related works and would take place only when budget is available for implementation.

SITE LOCATION

The project site is located on erven 263-RE, CA847, 1834-RE, CA37-844, CA844, CA846 and 93284-RE, False Bay, Cape Town, Western Cape.

APPLICABLE LEGISLATION

Application has been made to the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment for environmental authorisation in terms of the National Environmental Management Act 107 of 1998 and the EIA Regulations, 2014 (GNR 326 of 2017) to undertake the following listed activities:
