


The Grootplaat rehabilitation project is focused on the watercourses on Farm 15/37 and the remainder RE/37 near Aurora within the Bergrivier Municipality, Western Cape. The property extends across approximately 2 146 ha and is situated within the upper catchment of the Kuilders River system. The site is a high plateau historically used for agriculture, with a valley-bottom watercourse and various associated habitats. The property has been subject to historical agricultural activities, hydrological modification and associated infrastructure development. Over time, these activities, together with the proliferation of invasive alien plant vegetation, altered hydrological processes, drainage modifications, channelisation, erosion and sedimentation, have resulted in prolonged degradation or watercourses and their associated freshwater ecosystems, which reduced the hydrological connectivity, ecological functioning of theses aquatic system.
PROJECT PROPOSAL
The applicant proposes the rehabilitation of degraded wetlands, watercourses, in-channel dams and former agricultural lands on the Grootplaat site through targeted rehabilitation interventions that improve hydrological functioning, biodiversity and ecosystem resilience.

An application for Environmental Authorisation has been submitted to the Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning in terms of the National Environmental Management Act, 1998 (Act 107 of 1998), and the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Regulations, 2014 (as amended), for the undertaking of the following listed activities:
