Amended Environmental Authorisation for the Upgrade of Gwaing River Bridge

The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environmental has granted an amendment to the environmental authorisation for the upgrade of the Gwaing Bridge along the N2, Section 7, George Local Municipality, Western Cape (Ref 14/12/16/3/3/1/1729/AM1) in terms of the National Environmental Management Act, 1998 and the 2017 Environmental Impact Assessment Regulations.

The amendment is for the extension of the period to complete construction from five (5) years of commencement of the activity on site to fifteen (15) years.  The amendment was required to allow continuation of construction, as the construction period lapsed due to challenges experienced with the Contractors and flooding event that damaged the formwork. 

The amended environmental authorisation is dated 09/06/2026 and was issued on 10/06/2026

You are reminded that an appeal maybe lodged against this decision in terms of the National Appeal Regulations, 2025 (as amended). A summary of the appeal process is provided in Page 2-3 of the Environmental Authorisation amendment.  Should you wish to appeal the decision, you must submit the appeal in writing to the appeal administrator and provide a copy of the appeal to the applicant, any registered interested and affected parties and any organ of state with interest in this matter within 20 calendar days from the date of this notification.
