

BACKGROUND AND PROJECT RATIONALE
The City of Cape Town proposes to develop a new cemetery in Tafelsig, Mitchells Plain, Cape Town on Portion 60 of Farm CA544. The site is located on Swartklip Road south of the Swartklip Sports Facility
The proposed cemetery development would have a footprint of 13 hectares.
The proposed development requires an Environmental Authorisation from the Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning (DEA&DP).
SITE DESCRIPTION
The site is situated in Mitchells Plain, Tafelsig and is bordered by Swartklip Main Road on the east, Spine Road on the north and the Tafelsig residential community to the west and south.
Application has been made for environmental authorisation to undertake listed activities in terms of the National Environmental Management Act (107 of 1998) and EIA Regulations, 2014 as amended (GNR 326 of 2017):
Activity 23 of Listing Notice 1 (GNR 327 of 2017): The development of cemeteries of 2 500 square metres or more in size.
Activity 15 of Listing Notice 3 (GNR 324 of 2017): The transformation of land bigger than 1 000 square metres in size, to residential, retail, commercial, industrial or institutional use, where, such land was zoned open space, conservation or had an equivalent zoning, on or after 02 August 2010.
The 30-day commenting period for the revised draft BAR commences on Wednesday 09 October to Friday 08 November 2024.
