BACKGROUND 

The City of Cape Town proposes to develop a new cemetery in Tafelsig, Mitchells Plain, Cape Town on Portion 60 of Farm CA544. The site is located on Swartklip Road south of the Swartklip Sports Facility

SITE DESCRIPTION

The site is located between Mitchells Plain and Khayelitsha. The property where the development is set to take place is approximately 51 hectares (ha) in size. The cemetery will occupy an area of approximately 11 ha south of the Swartklip Sports Facility located on the property. The site bordered by Swartklip Raod (M49) on the west, Spine Road, (M32) to the north, and residential areas on the south and east.  

APPLICABLE LEGISLATION

Application has been made for environmental authorisation to undertake listed activities in terms of the National Environmental Management Act (107 of 1998) and EIA Regulations, 2014 as amended (GNR 326 of 2017):

• Listing Notice 1 (GNR 327 of 2017): Activity 23; and
• Listing Notice 3 (GNR 324 of 2017): Activity 15. 

The Final Basic Assessment Report has been submitted to the Western Cape Department of Environmental Affairs and Planning for decision. 

All comments received during the public participation process has been responded to and can be viewed in Appendix F1 of the final Basic Assessment Report.
