The City of Cape Town is inviting comment on the proposed redevelopment of the Strand Street Quarry. The quarry is located on Strand Street between the historic Bo-Kaap and De Waterkant areas.

A first draft concept for this site has been developed in consultation with local stakeholder representatives drawn from civic associations, sporting groups, and community organisations, to determine the best use and conceptual layout of the quarry site.

The proposed redevelopment would turn the quarry site into a multi-use community precinct that integrates sports, culture, economic activities and tourism in a very unique setting. Given that the quarry is part of a national heritage site, and in close proximity to the Bo-Kaap, the Noon Gun, and Table Mountain National Park, the design integrates tourist related activities, and proposals to preserve and celebrate the rich heritage of the surrounding communities.

The City of Cape Town is now reviewing the concept design based on comments received during a public participation process in November and December 2023, before any applications are made for the various statutory approvals that will be required.

This website provides access to project information and allows you to register your interest for future participation processes.

Commenting period

An initial 30-day commenting period on the draft concept ended on 4 December 2023.

You may still register your interest, to be kept informed on future participation opportunities.
